Otoplasty, often known as ear surgery, is a highly effective surgical procedure that can reshape the ears and reduce their size. The procedure is quite safe.
The fact that many people are born with prominent ears (also known as bat ears) can have a significantly negative psychological effect mainly on children. The condition affects approximately 5% of the population and is a very common problem. The most common causes are an absence, an overgrowth, or an abnormal development of one or more of the ear's anatomical components (helix, antihelix, concha, lobe).
Otoplasty results in a reduction in the concha's abnormal curvature and / or the creation of an antihelix ( the most common problem). Incisions are created behind the ear; in some cases, hypertrophic cartilage is also removed from area. The procedure is not particularly painful and ensures a successful outcome.
During an otoplasty, a few surgical techniques can be used depending on the size and shape of the ears . Can be performed on both children and adults.

The process usually takes an hour and a half, although it can vary depending on the circumstances.
Usually this is a day case procedure.
The sutures are removed in one week after the procedure. During the first two weeks , the patient will have a special elastic bandage ( tennis band ) over his / her head to keep the ears still.
Otoplasty is not a painful procedure at all, contrary to popular belief.
