In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of people diagnosed with various types of skin cancers. This increase has been mainly attributed to sun exposure. There are several predisposing factors to skin cancers but the main risk factor by far is prolonged and excessive exposure to UV radiation from the sun or artificial sources
Melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma are the primary subtypes of skin cancer with the latest being the most common
Skin cancers can often be highly aggressive and even fatal; hence, they need prompt treatment consisting mainly of surgical excision
Patients would usually present to the Plastic surgeon with a new lesion or changes in some characteristics of a pre existing lesion,such as increasing in size, changing colour or causing pain or discomfort due to location or size.
At this stage a biopsy is required in most of the cases ideally performed by a plastic surgeon specializing in the field who would be able to perform the necessary reconstruction of the defect with the best cosmetic result

The initially diagnosis is by clinical examination and Dermoscopy.
In cases where the patient has had a digital mole mapping in the past we are able to compare a pre existing lesion and decide whether there are changes that would require a biopsy
The final diagnosis is made of course with a biopsy analysed by a specialist /Histopathologist

In most cases, the most successful therapy for skin cancer is surgical excision, which must be performed by a plastic surgeon specializing in the field.
