As the embryo develops from week 5 through week 8, the thumb and the other fingers come together and then split apart. This process occurs during embryogenesis. Syndactyly is the condition that develops when this separation does not take place. There is typically a genetic component, but this is only sometimes true.

In most cases, syndactyly does not result in significant medical complications. The condition becomes far more severe when the thumb and little finger are linked.

As the child grows, these fingers, which are of a different height than the fingers they are linked to, create deformity in the fingers to which they are joined.
